History

The Crossover School opened on 4th July 1891. During this time the township of Crossover was a busy community with mining and timber.

There was a hotel, a post office, a sawmill, a railway station. The rail line ran from Warragul to Noojee. The township of Crossover is situated 16kms north of Warragul in West Gippsland Victoria.

On 7th November 2002 a meeting was called by the community to decide what we could do to save the school from sale by the Baw Baw Shire.

A submission was presented to the council and management control was granted to the community.

The school was in desperate need of repair inside and out.

The grounds were just as badly neglected. A pine plantation on the school grounds had been cut down and removed and were left with 80 huge stumps.

Thanks to community and local business support, these stumps were dug up and removed.

Working bees were arranged to clean up the grounds and plant new shrubs.

The old toilet block had also been removed so we purchased one from a business closing down in East Gippsland. It came in two sections, and  they were spaced far enough apart to add a disabled toilet and shower between the two toilets.

The school buildings had to be painted, and colours befitting the era were chosen.  The shelter shed was converted into an approved kitchen, with lined walls and ceiling, installed windows, fitted fly screens and a tiled floor.

At the time the school was given two gas stoves, and fridges.  Many other kitchen utensils were donated.  Trestle tables were built by one of the members and chairs were purchased

Catering

Catering is a huge source of funding. Upgrades were made to the carpet, fitted blinds, a combustion wood heater in the open fireplace and air conditioning was installed in the school and the kitchen.
Thanks to the Bendigo Community Bank at Neerim South.

As time goes on work continues with care of the school.  The school applies for grants whenever possible.  The Baw Baw Shire Council has installed a new roof, Solar panels and also new large windows as well as the renewal of the access ramp.

An area was cleared for a car park and the basketball court was resurfaced.  A separate concrete path was constructed from the car park to the school.

The latest upgrade has been the building of a new Activity Shelter Shed in keeping with the heritage appeal for visitors to have an extra under cover area.
